=========== QUAKE NAME EDITOR v1.1 README.TXT ============ (Last updated 3/13/97) Introduction ============ Quake Name Editor is the ONLY way to easily create a name for your character in Multiplayer Quake that utilizes the full set of characters allowed in Quake. This includes Gold and Orange letters, bars, shapes, and other strange characters to make your name stand out from the rest! Quit typing arcane ALT-123 commands to get the high characters. With Quake Name Editor, (I hate to be cliché) you just "Point and Click" at the characters you want to visually set up the name you want to use. Then when you're finished creating the name just the way you want it, you Save the Script and its ready to run in Quake. Requirements: ============= - Windows95 or WindowsNT 4.0 - 8mb RAM (although you need 16 to play Quake over the internet in Windows95) - Pentium Processor or better to play Quake - Mouse or equivalent pointing device - Visual Basic 4.0 32-bit runtime files (see below) Installation: ============= Installing QNameEd is extremely easy. Just [unzip if appropriate] and run Setup.exe. A complete uninstaller is included as well. Although you should have no problems installing QNameEd, if you have any, feel free to contact me directly at: tookycat@nconnect.net If you need the Visual Basic Runtime files (as described below), you will want to download the EZQNameEd11.zip archive (about 1.5mb). If you already have the required files as listed below (many people do), you can save yourself some downloading time by just downloading QNameEd11.zip. Note that all files that are in the ZIP version (readme.txt, file_id.diz, and license.txt), are inside the installation so you can delete them along with the installation archive after installation. Required Runtime Files: ======================= Quake Name Editor requires that your system have installed the Visual Basic Runtime files. "What the heck are they!?", you might ask. You need them to run QNameEd. An easy way to determine if you have them is to see if you have the file VB40032.DLL (~790k) in your \WINDOWS\SYSTEM\ directory. If you have it, congratulations, you dont need to download anything else. If you dont have the file in your system directory, you will need to spend about 5 minutes downloading them (and you won't have to get them for any other Visual Basic 32-bit programs that require them, since you'll have them). To install the VB4-32 runtime files, you should just download the version of QNameEd that includes these files in the setup, also known as the EZ-Install version. For you technical types, the files that are needed specifically are: (and you need each one to run the program), VB40032.dll Ven2232.olb Comctl32.ocx Comdlg32.ocx MFC40.dll MSVCRT40.dll Olepro32.dll All of these are included in the EZ-Install. Note that many programs make use of these files, for instance both Netscape Navigator and Internet Explorer 3.0 give you MFC40.dll and MSVCRT40.dll when you download either.. Features: ========= - The only way to visually create yourself a player name - 32 bit, Windows95 style controls - Full palette of characters - ULTRA-LOW Registration fee of $3.00. This is so cheap that there isn't anyone who can't afford to register! Known Issues: ============= - Quake will display some names strangely in the Multiplayer Menu in Quake, in the Player Name box. Ignore this. When used in actual game play, your name will appear just as you created it in QNameEd. - Using QNameEd on a system with BETA versions of the Microsoft V5.0 Common Dialog control and or V5.0 Windows Common Controls (found both in the VB5 Control Creation Edition BETA, and the Visual InterDev BETA, may cause errors.) - If you get error messages upon initial startup about files missing, or error 31305 about can't read from file, or custom control errors, just download the EZ-Install and you will get all the files you need, with no need to worry. - If upon installation, you get errors about Can't find Application Removal Log file, ST4UNST.xxx, You need to delete all files in your \WINDOWS\ directory starting with ST4UNST (ST4UNST.*). These are old log files that didnt get completed, and need to be deleted. If this doesnt fix the problem, you don't have the Visual Basic Runtime files mentioned above, and need to get the EZQNameEd.zip install. - Quake Name Editor may look very poor on 256 color displays, and you may get Green characters. The Quake character set has 256 of its own colors, so to have windows try to juggle its own may produce visually displeasing results. I recommend 16-bit or higher color. If you are having really poor readability on the program upon startup, you are most likely running at 256 colors. To switch to 16 bit, you: - Click start button - Click Settings - Click Display - Click Settings - Click Color Palette - Select High Color (16-bit) - Click OK at the bottom of the property sheet - Click YES to any Restart questions. Now that you are in 16 bit color more, you will be able to enjoy QNameEd and also, you will notice that all graphics on your computer, especially on the Web and/or JPG files, will look much smoother, and less spotty. Setup programs look cooler too... - Using the Large and/or Extra Large Windows schemes may produce undesirable results as far as display. Operation should proceed as normal though (i.e. the output files will be correct.) - If upon startup you get an Out of Memory Error, Can't Create AutoRedraw Image, you are running too many things at once in windows. You need to close some stuff down, at least while QNameEd is starting. I have got QNameEd to start with 100% success on a 486DX2/66 with 12MB RAM. - Using Windows95 OSR2 (v4.00.95b) has not been tested. - Version 1.0 (initial release) had a TERRIBLE problem in that in inadvertantly used a trial setup program that i thought was just limited. I had no way of knowing it wouldnt work on other machines since it worked great on mine. This is fixed in this release. - Version 1.0a (second release) had a problem on some users systems that werent moving fast enough upon startup, causing a RUNTIME ERROR #5, INVALID PROCEDURE CALL to occur. This has been fixed with the v1.1 release (this one). Unknown Issues: =============== Unknown. Operation: ========== Quake Name Editor is incredibly easy to operate, with more than 1 way to arrive at the final result. Just flip through the tabs of characters so you can see what you all have to work with, and then click on the character you want to use. This puts it in the buffer (above the tabs, outlined in blue). Then click on one of the 15 available character spaces at top for your name to select it, and you will see a gold bar appear underneath to indicate it is selected. Then hit Apply to copy the Buffer picture into the selected name space. There are shortcuts however. Doubleclicking on a character in the tabs will put it right into the currently selected name space. Likewise, double clicking a name space at top will copy the buffer picture to it. To clear a name space, simple select it so it has the gold bar underneath, and hit clear. - AutoAdvance Clicking the Options menu, and checking AutoAdvance on, will make it so when you change a character in your name at top, it will automatically select the next character space to the right. This can be very handy. - Right Click Delete Checking this (located under AutoAdvance) makes it so when you click the right mouse button over a name character, it will clear it. - Choose Quake Script Directory You will want to do this the first time you run QNameEd. Simply select the directory where your \QUAKE\ID1\ is located. Then when you Save Script it will default right to that directory. You only have to do this once, as QNameEd remembers your settings. - New Script This instantly clears your name and gives you a blank space to create a new one. - Save Script Takes your created script and converts it into a quake script file (.scr). Once you created your script and saved it into your \QUAKE\ID1\ directory, to use your name you can do either of the following: 1. run the commandline QUAKE.EXE +EXEC MYNAME.SCR (can include more parameters, substitute your script file) 2. Load quake normally, and bring down the console (the ~ key), and type EXEC MYNAME.SCR This will execute the "myname.scr" name script file. Then you can check what your current name is by either hitting TAB (in a deathmatch) or by typing NAME in the console. Notes: ====== Characters 10 and 13 are linefeed and return carriage, respectively. This is why they are missing. Characters 160 and 32 are spaces, and are blacked out for use as such. Also, this should work with any release of standard quake, including Dos quake, VQuake, GLQuake, and WinQuake. It does not work with QuakeWorld due to the way QuakeWorld only allows for 1 name per account. QNameEd.zip and EZQNameEd.zip were the BUGGY installs, they have been replaced by QNameEd11.zip and EZQNameEd11.zip. The ones that end with "11" are v1.1. Registration: ============= Quake Name Editor is distributed as shareware. Shareware provides you with the opportunity to "test drive" software before you buy. This allows you to determine if a program meets your particular needs. You are invited to make copies of this program in its original, unmodified form and pass them on to friends, etc. However, if you make use of this program, you are required to register your copy. Shareware Limitations: - 5 Second delay upon startup after drawing the characters - Limited to 11 character names, with the 12-15 as *QNE Upon Registration: - 5 Second delay is removed forever - You get to make whatever name you like up to the max of 15 characters - You get priority with Technical Support - You get to make me as well as yourself feel good, knowing you have done the right thing and brightened both our days :D To register, send in the U.S. Mail: - Your first and last name (who you want it to be registered to) - Your working email address that you check most often - Your return address in case something goes awry - A letter/note saying what you would like a registration key for Quake Name Editor (so I don't just get money in the mail and not know what it's for) - And $3.00 cash or check to: Josh Straub In the Den 3417 George Ct. This is the same as 1.0 except it installs correctly now. 1.1 - Third Release. This fixes the Runtime Error #5 that happened to about 10% of all users, keeping them from ever starting the program. ==== Thanks To ==== - Sean Martin (Redwood) for helping me beta test and for his half-a-million-hits-plus web site that he announced QNameEd on for me.
